Tourists of Zagreb: Relaxation Time in Zagreb
In this month's interview with tourists of Zagreb, we've talked with Mike from Canada. The first interesting thing to me when we started talking was that we share the same surname. Of course, we all know there are a lot of first, second and third-generation of Croatians in Canada, and Mike is one of them.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from and how did you choose to visit Croatia and Zagreb?
Well, I'm from Vancouver Canada, but I'm half Croatian. My dad's side is from here so I enjoy visiting the country whenever I can. I have been to Croatia three times already, and I really enjoy coming here. My father was very proud of his heritage, so I feel a connection when visiting the homeland. I also have a friend that lives in Zagreb and knows the city well. So that helps to feel welcome, too. I really just enjoy generally being here, the laid back culture and lifestyle.
Which places in the city have you visited? Any favorites that are especially memorable to you?
I visited most parts of the city. I especially enjoyed the city center and places like the main Ban Jelačić square, The Upper Town, Tkalčićeva street and the surrounding area.
I understand a little Croatian, but it is good to visit as it improves my level of language every time. I especially enjoy going to the Dolac Market, as the vendors don't all speak English. So I'm forced to speak Croatian and its great practice and fun for me.

What were your first impressions of Zagreb?
My first thoughts about Zagreb were that it is a charming old European city with lots of history to explore. I would encourage people to really explore the city. I had some of my local friends take me hiking to the Sljeme mountain where I had some great bean soup in a nice mountain house. Also, I have been to a national soccer team game which was an amazing experience, I'd definitely recommend.
Can you tell us some differences compared to your hometown, Vancouver?
It is completely different. I mean, the way of living, culture and the customs compared to North America really differs. I can especially see that in everyday social life. People here take more time just to socialize, and everything is much more relaxed.
As I've said, I met lots of local people during my stay. People were in general very friendly and helpful to me. And I also noticed that most people speak English so, that's great for tourists
Did you try any local food and drink specialties in Zagreb?
Yes, of course. I especially enjoyed drinks like Croatian beers and wines. I think Croatian wines are very much underrated so I would recommend everyone visiting to try them out if you're a wine lover. Also, from food, I loved all the traditional dishes like kremšnite, štrukli, čobanac, čevapi, burek, pasta with fresh truffles. So many favorites!
I think the best thing about Zagreb are cafes and restaurants. They are really great and inexpensive for North American standards. I have visited some great restaurants like Vinodol and Boban that are reasonably priced for great service and quality.
My mom was with me as well during this trip and she really loved the cakes and pastry shops like Vincek.
Is there anything you didn't like about Zagreb?
I would say only one thing that bothered me, and it's the cigarette smoke in the bars. When you can sit outside on the patio, it's fine. And some bars have a decent ventilation system but some are really terrible, and it gets unbearable for both smokers and non-smokers I'd say. So, I hope there will be stronger regulations one day for it like in Canada.

Do you have any must-visit places for other tourists to see in Zagreb? Or any advice for them?
Must see are definitely Gornji Grad or the Upper Town in English. Also, I would recommend to go and see an opera or a play in Croatian National Theather (HNK). Another recommendation would be to take a tram out to Maksimir Park and just spend a day enjoying the sunshine and nature. Also, another favorite is drinking coffee for three hours in Cvjetni Square on Saturday morning. I love this relaxed tradition at the weekends.
In the end, would you like to come back to Zagreb? Would you recommend it to your friends as a destination?
Yes, I will come back to Zagreb - I love it here. It also has a special spot in my heart and would recommend it to anyone to visit.
