Modern and interactive museum celebrating success: Here are the details of the newly opened Croatian Sports Museum

Many media sources claim that Zagreb has the highest number of museums per capita in the world. Some articles point out that the city has around 30 to as many as 40 museums, with a population of about 800,000, which results in a very high ratio.

Among the most well-known are the Museum of Broken Relationships, the Museum of Illusions, the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the Archaeological Museum, as well as some newer ones, such as the HaHaHouse, and the newly opened Croatian Sports Museum in Zagreb, which contains more than 500,000 items.

The museum is housed in a fully renovated space, spread over two floors and covering more than 500 square metres, located in the very centre of the capital. The first permanent exhibition is divided into two thematic sections: in the basement, “Foundations”, which explores the development of sport and physical education from the second half of the 19th century, and on the ground floor, “Achievements”, dedicated to the accomplishments of Croatian athletes at the Olympic Games and world championships since the country’s independence.

The museum is modern, interactive, and multimedia-based, allowing it to be regularly updated and adapted to new developments in Croatian sport, as well as to contemporary museum standards. The museum’s collection comprises almost 500,000 items, while the permanent exhibition displays a representative selection of the most valuable material: around 1,000 objects, books, and documents, along with approximately 500 photographs, distributed across the two mentioned floors.

Construction works on the future exhibition space of the Croatian Sports Museum began in February 2021, in a building protected as a cultural heritage site. Funding for the total investment, amounting to approximately five million euros, was secured from the State Budget of the Republic of Croatia.

This is undoubtedly a museum well worth visiting and enjoying. According to the museum’s official website, it is closed to the public on Mondays. From Tuesday to Saturday, it is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., while on Sundays it is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

As for ticket prices for the permanent exhibition, adults pay €10, pupils, students, and senior citizens €6, while group tickets are subject to different rates, ranging from €7 per person up to €22 per group. Guided tours in Croatian cost €10, while tours in English cost €20. Group tickets and guided tours must be booked in advance via the museum’s official email address.
