More than Words

Festival of Lights 2023

A Journey Into The World Of Lights

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Festival of Lights in Zagreb, and it was one of the most mesmerising experiences of my life. From the moment I arrived, the city was buzzing with excitement and anticipation for the stunning light installations that would soon light up the night sky.

Walking through the streets of the city, I was immediately struck by the intricate light displays and installations that adorned nearly every corner. From glowing kites above the city's central station to a neon tunnel on Opatovina street, each installation was a unique and dazzling display of artistry.
One of my favourite installations was located on Dolac Market. The bright and playful display featured two giant figures, inspired by the Inuits, suspended above the bustling marketplace. As I watched the crowds of people weaving in and out of the market stalls, the vibrant colours and shapes of the installation added an extra layer of magic to the already lively atmosphere.

The number of visitors who visited the Festival on Friday and Saturday showed the general interest of Zagreb residents and foreigners in stopping for a moment and enjoying the view. And I loved it!

An Exploration of Light and Sound

Walking through the city's illuminated streets, I felt like I was on a journey through a different world. Each installation seemed to transport me to a new dimension, filled with colour, light, and sound.

One of the most breathtaking installations was in park Zrinjevac. Glowing "Neon Circles" really made me want to dance with tangled glowing neon threads, each twisting and turning in the most mesmerising dance of colour and light you can imagine. Experiencing this kind of neon world of wonder, I felt like I was dreaming a beautiful and peaceful dream while floating in those neon lights!

In fact, I actually did float because in the park, around the pavilion, you could queue up for the neon swing that is held by, no more and no less than, a neon cloud.

I am also delighted with the artist's commitment to entertaining even the youngest with their ideas. The most impressive play of colours, figures and sounds was the one on Mažuranić square. "Why, but why do I have to go to school?" gathered parents with their children who enjoyed the art expressions.

An Experience to Remember

Overall, the Festival of Lights in Zagreb was an unforgettable experience I will treasure forever. The city truly came alive with light, colour, and sound, and I felt like I was part of something exceptional.

One of the sculptures at the Festival reminded me of how important it is to get away from the screen and indulge in some live scenes. With the company of good friends, without cell phones and distractions, I really enjoyed walking around the city.

If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable experience, I highly recommend attending next year's Festival of Lights in Zagreb. It truly is a show not to be missed, from the breathtaking light works and shows, to the buzzing energy and passion of the city.
It seemed that this year's Festival attracted more visitors than the popular Advent, but you will have to see for yourself next time, when you engage in the play of lights.
